Season opening with a Walpurgis theme

A spring picture of one of the old houses at Maribo's open-air museum, surrounded by blooming mirabelle plums.

Generations ago, when almost all Danes lived as farmers, April 30th – Valborg Eve – was the great turning point of the year. It was the day when winter officially let go and summer was at its doorstep. The darkness retreated, the light returned, and the first green shoots broke through the cold earth. It was celebrated with bonfires, nightly parties, and colorfully decorated houses and city trees, where fresh beech branches and ribbons marked the beginning of something new.

At the open-air museum De Gamle Huse, Valborg Eve still means something very special – it is our first opening day of the new season. And of course, it should be celebrated. Come and join us as we mark the start of a brand new year at De Gamle Huse. Upon arrival, you will receive a small kit so you can help get the museum ready for season 2026.

This year we are also offering a free introduction for schools and institutions that want to hear more about this both mysterious and significant day. We will give a short 15-minute intro, and then you can continue on your own. There is room for six teams on the day – on a first-come, first-served basis.

Would you like to take your class to the open-air museum on April 30? Then write to bestilling@museumlollandfalster.dk to book an appointment. The school courses start regularly between 10 am and 12 noon.

Please note: Unless otherwise stated, the event will take place in Danish.
